The Debt - Movie Review
The Debt follows three Mossad agents who have captured a doctor who has performed many terrible experiments on people in the camps during the Cold War. The doctor (Jesper Christensen) is working in East Berlin as a gynecologist so the agents must devise to plan to get to him. Rachel (Jessica Chastain) is on her first mission, along with David (Sam Worthington) and Stefan (Marton Csokas), all who have survived the Holocaust with tragic pasts.
Fast forward thirty-one years, where the three are heros in Isreal. Rachel (Helen Mirren) has married Stefan (Tom Wilkinson) and they have a daughter who has written a book about her parents mission. When David (Ciaran Hinds) suddenly appears after taking off to travel, things get uncovered about what really happened so many years ago.
The movie was a little confusing when it first started, jumping between the past and present, but after you get a foothold on what is going on, it's quite a gripping tale. You begin to feel the desperation of the three agents to capture and expose the horrible acts the war criminal has committed. The doctor has good beside manners but when his cover slips away, you see how truly evil he is and he knows which buttons to press to really get to his captors. There are some intensely graphic death scenes, so cover your eyes if you're squeamish!
The Debt comes out in theatres this Wednesday, August 31.

Colombiana - Movie Review
Colombiana starts off with 10-year-old Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) witnessing her parents being murdered by Colombian gang leader Don Luis (Beto Benites). She escapes his men and goes to the U.S. Embassy where she hands over a vital memory disk that her father gave her as her passport out of Colombia. She runs off to find her uncle (Cliff Curtis), and from then on, vows to get vengeance on her parents killers.
15 years later, Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) has become an expert assassin, working for her uncle as well as tracking down all the members of Luis' gang on the side and killing them one by one. Things get complicated when the CIA gets involved, and her booty call Danny (Michael Vartan) accidentally gets a picture of her leaked.
Colombiana was really intense and it was just non-stop action. There are some amazing action and escape sequences that have you at the edge of your seat. Zoe Saldana plays the role of Cataleya perfectly, as an elusive killer who has built walls around herself. It's nice to see women in these powerful roles but Zoe Saldana is so wispy thin! I definitely recommend watching this movie, it's one of the better action movies I have seen in a while.
Colombiana is out in theatres everywhere now.

Our Idiot Brother - Movie Review
Paul Rudd stars in this independent film about a dysfunctional family with a star studded cast. Ned Rochlin (Rudd) is a laidback guy who lives a simple life. After selling weed to a policeman (in uniform), he gets put in jail. When he gets out, he drifts through his three sister's homes (Emily Mortimer, Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks) and wreaks havoc in all their lives.
Our Idiot Brother was a light and enjoyable movie. Ned is dumbed down a lot, which is explained by his philosophy of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. You can't help but laugh as he goes from sister to sister and unintentionally reveals things about themselves and their family that they didn't know was happening themselves. The movie never really takes off though, and the ending was a little silly. It's a nice indie film to see!
Our Idiot Brother comes out in theatres today, August 26th.

HP TouchPad Major Price Drop!
HP has dropped the prices on their Touchpad tablets that just came out a few months ago. Originally $399.99 for the 16GB and $499.99 for the 32GB both with Wi-Fi, the prices has now been slashed down to only a mere $99.99 for the 16GB and $149.99 for the 32GB. That's a pretty astounding price drop, considering the Touchpad has only been out on the market for a little over a month! This price change comes on the heels of HP announcing they will not be continuing their webOS devices (phones and the TouchPad). So check out your local Best Buy, Futureshop, and Staples to snag yours now. You better run to the store too, as these are flying off the shelves!!

Conan the Barbarian - Movie Review
Conan the Barbarian is another remake out in theatres this summer, based on the original movie from 1982. Jason Momoa fills Arnold Schwarzenegger's shoes as Conan. When he was a boy, Conan's father was murdered and his village destroyed by Khalar Zym, on a quest to reunite the scattered pieces of the Mask of Acheron, a powerful object that would make him a God. Conan makes it his quest to find the man responsible for killing his father and on the way must save Tamara (Rachel Nichols), a "pure blood" descendant of the sorcerers whose blood would awaken the Mask of Acheron. Rose McGowan plays Marique, the witch daughter of Khalar Zym.
There is not too much of story to Conan, except that he fights and kills without much differentiating between the good and bad guys. There is plenty of blood splattering and it gets pretty graphic, especially in 3D, so this movie is not for the faint of heart. The sweeping CGI landscapes are beautiful but that's pretty much all I have to say for this movie. Even Momoa makes for a really creepy looking Conan. I almost prefer Schwarzengger instead.
Conan the Barbarian hits theatres everywhere today.

The Fair at the PNE is coming!
You know summer is coming to an end when you hear that the Fair at the PNE is back. I love going to the fair and I look forward to it every year! The Superdogs, the games, the concerts, the marketplace, the food! What's not to love?
PNE gate passes are $20 this year and Playland ride passes are $42.75. Remember you can purchase your tickets online and save some money! This year they are also offering free admission to children aged 13 and under when accompanied by a paying adult 21 years or older. You can bring a max of five children along per paying adult! Sounds like a deal to me! If you want to save even more money, there will be free PNE gate admission offered from 9am to 12pm on Monday, August 22. Usually this happens on opening day, but they changed it up this year.
Don't you feel excited already? The fair is coming THIS WEEKEND! It will run from August 20 to September 5th, 2011. I'll see you there!
Fright Night - Movie Review
Fright Night is the latest 3D horror film coming to theatres this year, a remake of the 1985 movie of the same name. High school student Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) thinks his new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell) is a vampire after several students in his class start disappearing. He decides to investigate and breaks into Jerry's house. Desperate to kill off Jerry and stop him from hurting anyone else, Charley goes to Peter Vincent (David Tennant), the famous vampire expert on the Las Vegas strip.
The plot is quite predictable, and makes for a slightly entertaining horror movie. While I'm not really a fan of watching horror films on the big screen, I didn't think this one was too bad. The 3D effects were terrible though. Everything was so dark and blurry, it was so terrible and you leave the theatre with strained eyes. Colin Farrell makes a pretty creepy vampire, though when the characters actually turn into vampires, it's pretty ugly. I say save your money (and your eyes) and just watch this in 2D. This is a good little thriller for fans of the original Fright Night movie.
Fright Night comes out in theatres this Friday, August 19th.

Theatre Under the Stars
I was very lucky to receive a pair of passes to Theatre Under the Stars from Visitor's Choice. Theatre Under the Stars happens every summer at the Malkin Bowl Theatre in Stanley Park. This outdoor theatre is a great place to enjoy the summer nights! Anything Goes was on last night, a musical about the people on board the S.S. American that is sailing from New York to England. Billy Crocker has followed his love, debutant Hope Harcourt, onboard the ship to convince her to marry him instead of her finance, the wealthy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Meanwhile, gangster Moonface Martin is trying to stay hidden, Billy is trying to avoid his boss Elisha Witney, and Billy's friend Reno is trying to find love.
It was definitely a lot of fun and the music and dance sequences were great. It was funny and entertaining and a great family outing. Remember to bring a jacket or a blanket as it get chilly after dark! Anything Goes and Bye Bye Birdie are the two musicals this summer, the two playing on alternating nights. Theatre Under the Stars wraps up August 20th so hurry if you want to catch a show this year!
For more information about Theatre Under the Stars, check out their website here.

Rio - DVD Review
Rio tells the story of Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a blue macaw who lives in Minnesota with his companian, Linda (Leslie Mann). This is the only life he knows, as he was snatched up by exoctic bird smugglers when he was just a little baby. One day, Brazilian ornithologist Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) comes to take him back to Rio de Janeiro to mate with another blu macaw, as they are the last of their kind and must save the species. There Blu meets Jewel (Anne Hathaway), whose only goal is to escape the man-made cage. When the two are stolen, they are chained together and they must work together to find their freedom, which proves difficult as Blu has never learned to fly. Nigel, a cockatoo who works for the bird smugglers is after them but they get help from friends Rafael (George Lopez), Nico (Jamie Foxx) and Pedro (Will.i.am).
Rio is a great family friendly movie that an all age audience will enjoy. It's a very colourful movie with all the different exotic birds in the opening sequence and also very flamboyant, as the scenes in Rio take place as the carnival is happening. The voice cast is great and a perfect fit for the characters. The DVD special features include a deleted scene and a music video with Taio Cruz, as well as a jukebox that includes all the catchy songs from the movie so you can sing along or boogey around your house to it. There is also a special code to unlock 15 levels of Angry Birds Rio for your computer or mobile phone. The DVD and Blu-Ray is out in stores now!

Kayaking in Deep Cove
I went to Deep Cove for some kayaking after work with a few friends to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. There were moon jellies in the water and we saw some harbour seals as well! The scenery was beautiful and we were able to watch the sun set as we paddled back. It was a perfect day for a 2 hour kayaking trip and a great way to end the week. I definitely will be going again soon!

The Devil's Double - Movie Review
The Devil's Double follows Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper), who was forced to act as a body double for Uday Hussein, the sadistic psychopathic son of the Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein (Philip Quast). Latif is exposed to Uday's life of violence, sex and power. He gets fed up with it and looks for a way to get out without anyone getting hurt. Dominic Cooper does a fabulous job playing both roles. As Uday, he just becomes pure evil. On the other side, as Uday's doppelganger Latif, the good son who is only doing this to protect his family, you see the disgust with what he is being forced to do. The Devil's Double is captivating, and have you so entranced with what is going on. The most horrific thing of this movie is that it is all based on true events. Interspersed with scenes from history, you can only imagine how terrifying it was for Latif. It's worth watching.
The Devil's Double is now playing in select theatres.

30 Minutes Or Less - Movie Review
30 Minutes or Less stars Jesse Eisenberg as a pizza delivery guy, Nick, who has to deliver pizzas in 30 minutes or less. He gets kidnapped and forced to rob a bank by buddies Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson), who have planned to assassinate Dwayne's dad to take his lottery winnings and use it to open up a tanning salon/brothel. They strap a bomb onto Nick and sends him on his way. Of course, Nick goes to his best friend Chet (Aziz Ansari) and enlists him to help with the bank heist. Things go awry when the hitman Dwayne has hired turn the tables on Dwayne when he doesn't get him money from Nick.
The movie was pretty straightforward and a little dull. I didn't think there was that much going on, even when there were action scenes. The whole idea of this movie is a little over the top (though apparently someone was forced to rob a bank before) and you go in to the theatre knowing it's going to be a bad movie. Aziz Ansari was pretty hilarious, though he did get more frantic as the movie progressed and he becomes a bit grating after a while. Eisenberg plays the slacker well but even he couldn't rescue this movie.

The Help - Movie Review
The Help is a film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's novel of the same name. The story centres around Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis), an African-American maid who has spent her whole life raising white children. Her best friend Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) is also a maid. They agree to tell their stories to Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone), a young white woman who has recently graduated from the University of Mississippi to find that her maid has been "fired" and dreams to be a writer. Aibileen and Minny meet up with Skeeter secretly every day to tell her what it is like to be a black maid in a in white household, the racism and insults they go through.
The Help was an amazing movie! Viola Davis did a brilliant job playing Aibileen, her eyes convey the pain and anger she feels from the abuse she receives from her white employers. She still loves all the white kids she has raised since she was 14, though she is feeling bitterness after her own son died. Octavia Spencer stole some of the scenes with her character Minny, she's sassy and you can't help but laugh out loud. Both actresses did an amazing job. The Help showcased not only the racial tensions between whites and blacks, but the different social circles that people of the same race place each other. I definitely recommend checking this movie out. I'm going to read the book next!
The Help comes out in theatres everywhere this Wednesday, August 10th.

The Change-Up - Movie Review
Dave (Jason Bateman) and Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) are two friends who have drifted apart and now they live completely different lives than the other. Dave is a responsible adult - a lawyer, husband and father of three. Mitch is single, barely employed and parties it up every night. They go out for a night and while peeing into a fountain they both wish they had each others lives. Mitch wants a stable career and a loving family while Dave feels like he missed out on making bad choices and having fun when he was younger. When they wake up the next morning, they discover they have switched bodies and now have to live each others lives.
Much like Freaky Friday, the two characters learn how hard or different it is to live the others life and come to respect the other. The Change-Up is nothing new, with the story being quite predictable, though it is fun to watch Dave and Mitch go through everything. Jason Bateman has been appearing in so many films lately (see Horrible Bosses), and he's pretty hilarious! It's quite a raunchy film so if you are a fan of films like Wedding Crashers and Hall Pass, you will probably enjoy The Change-Up.
The Change-Up comes out in theatres this Friday, August 5th.
