The Hunger Games - Movie Review

The highly anticipated book-to-film adaptation, The Hunger Games, has finally been released yesterday. The movie, based on Suzanne Collin's bestselling young adult novel, stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson living in a dystopian future where young teens are forced to fight to the death on an annual live television show called The Hunger Games. The world of Panem is ruled by the Capitol and is split into 12 districts and each district must offer up a boy and girl to participate. Katniss Everdeen (Lawerence) and Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson) represent District 12. They must use what skills they have to survive and be crowned the winner of the 74th annual Hunger Games.

Without giving too much away for those who haven't read the books, the film is quite faithful to the novel, with only a few edits to keep the movie flowing. The movie was quite well done and was definitely a lot better than the book. Everyone was well cast and the actors did an amazing job. Jennifer Lawrence was great at playing a strong and caring character. The costumes of the people living in the Capitol were very well done, showing off their wacky sense of fashion. It was exactly how I imagined it! Because there were a lot of hand-held camera shots, the majority of the film was pretty jerky, so a word of advice is to sit in the back of the theatre if you are prone to getting motion sick! It was a good camera style to show off the grittiness of what was happening though.

The Hunger Games is out in theatres now - go see it!
