I went to the opening night of Cats, one of the longest running musicals on Broadway. I've always wanted to watch Cats ever since I was in elementary school. My grade 7 teacher really enjoyed musicals and got our class to sing them during music class - one of them was the song Memory from Cats. My mum even gave me the Cats CD as a birthday present. So it's been 12 years since then and I was excited to hear Cats was coming to Vancouver!
Cats is based on poems by T.S. Eliot and introduces many different cat characters throughout the musical. Grizabella, the cat that sings Memory, was one of my favorites - it was very sad to see all the cats shun her! Andrew Lloyd Webber must really like Elvis, because Rum Tum Tugger (a rock-and-roll type tomcat) makes me think of the Pharaoh from Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. The costumes and makeup were amazing - the hair was fascinating, with the tufts of fur that forms ears. I just stared throughout the show. Cats is a very fun musical to watch. There are great songs that just makes you want to sing along to!
Cats will be playing at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until April 15, 2012 - get your tickets now!
