EAT! Vancouver Food & Cooking Festival (Jun 1-3)

If you know me, then you know I love to eat! I went to EAT! Vancouver for the first time last year and ever since, I couldn't wait for next year. EAT! is rolling into town, with the festival starting tomorrow, June 1st and going through the weekend. There will be tons of different foods to try, as well as cooking demonstrations, celebrity chefs, wine and beer tasting, and even a little something for pets!

I made the mistake of eating lunch before I went last year and I ended up too full to eat much. There will be plenty of samples, as well as larger sized portions you can purchase with tickets, as well as take-home food items for purchase. EAT! is moving to BC Place Stadium this year, which is quite a large venue, so there will be plenty to see.

The hours of the festival are:
Friday, June 1st: 2 - 9pm
Saturday, June 2nd: 10am - 9pm
Sunday, June 3rd: 10am - 5pm

Tickets are $16 at the door, but if you buy them online, you save $2. For tickets and more information about EAT! Vancouver, go here.

Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash - Product Review

I have been using Dove body washes for a while now, though I usually buy the fruit scented ones (my favorites are the Dove Go Fresh) so when Klout offered a Dove Body wash perk, I was pretty pleased! The Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash has nutrium moisture, which means it contains 100% natural moisturizers that can be absorbed completely. It soap comes out thick, sort of like a lotion and smells really good. It leaves my skin feeling really soft and clean. Dove is a great name brand that I can trust and has a history of really great products for sensitive skin, so I would definitely recommend trying out the Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash!

The Song of Achilles - Book Review

The Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller, is a page-turning novel that brings us the back story of Achilles and his friend Patroclus. Set in Greece in the age of Gods and heros, Patroclus is introduced as an awkward and self-conscious young prince who accidentally kills a boy and is then exiled to the kingdom of Phthia. There, he is raised by King Peleus, the father of Achilles. Achilles is the complete opposite of Patroclus - handsome, strong, God-like. The two become close friends, and eventually, lovers. The Song of Achilles becomes a tale of love and betrayal, the long Trojan War serving as the backdrop.

Miller creates a complex character in Patroclus, and captures his insecurities and loneliness, his devotion to Achilles and to friendships. The scenes of war are exciting, with the young half-God Achilles discovering how perfectly he is made for war - Aristos Achaion, greatest of the Greeks. The interplay between Gods and mortals is mysterious, neither side ever in full control. The Song of Achilles weaves such a intense story that it`s hard not to get caught up in their world. If you love Greek myths, I strongly recommend The Song of Achilles, as it is a beautifully written story that gives readers a different look at the Trojan War.

Bistro 101

I visited Bistro 101 at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, where the school’s professional Culinary and Baking & Pastry Arts students get experience preparing the food and serving in a restaurant setting. Located just at the edge of Granville Island, the restaurant offers a beautiful view of the harbour and is a perfect place to visit after stroll on Granville Island.

Bistro 101 allows culinary students to gain "real life" experience cooking and serving at this restaurant.
Bistro 101 features a different menu everyday.
A delicious bread basket to start off your meal. There are four different type of breads.
An amuse bouche - Salmon tartare.
Mahi Mahi Fish Taco - beer battered mahi mahi with cabbage, sweetcorn salsa and chipotle mayo.
Sauteed Tiger Prawns with sesame coleslaw, cucumber coulis and toasted almonds.
Thai Coconut Soup. Kaffir lime, galangal ginger, red peppers, cilantro.
Chicken Scallopini with mashed potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and lemon caper sauce.
Seafood Gnocchi with braised octopus, steelhead trout, asparagus and rose sauce.
Chocolate Cake with mocha mousse and cream cheese icing and bourbon caramel sauce. The sugar cage over the cake was very pretty, as was the cocoa powder maple leaf!
S'mores Chocolate Pot with a mashmallow fluff and homemade graham crackers.
Overall, the food was all very delicious and beautifully prepared. The lemon caper sauce of the Chicken Scallopini was too sour, which overpowered the taste of the chicken, which was unfortunate, and the carrots could have cooked for a minute or two more. The chicken also seemed to be sitting in a ring of grease, so this was the only dish that was not up to par. The service was great, and the students were eager to help and answer questions. I will definitely come back to try another menu soon!

Bistro 101 offers a 3-course meal for only $24. For more information or to make reservations, visit Bistro101.com.

Rock of Ages - Welcome Back to the 80's!

Plenty of classic 80's hits are featured in Rock of Ages, presented by Broadway Across Canada at The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts. Rock of Ages centres around a small town girl, Sherrie (Shannon Mullen), who meets a city boy, Drew (Dominique Scott) in a rock club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. They fall in love, set to hits by Whitesnake, Journey, and Bon Jovi. With the great songs, long hair and makeup and acid-washed denim, there is never a dull moment!

The second act was especially good, with many full ensemble songs that showcased everyone's talent. Some of my favorites included We Built This City (Starship), Here I Go Again (Whitesnake) and the closing number, Don't Stop Believin' (Journey), which ended with a standing ovation.

What makes a night of 80's rock music more fun? Dressing in 80's wear!
Rock of Ages is a very fun musical to watch, and will have you singing along in your seat as you relive the 80's. So pull out your jean jacket and leg warmers and grab a friend - Rock of Ages will only be in Vancouver until May 13th. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased from Ticketmaster.

Spot Prawn Festival @ Granville Island #spotprawn2012

I headed down to the Fisherman's Wharf this weekend to check out the Spot Prawn Festival. This is an annual festival where everyone comes down to enjoy some boiled spot prawns, prepared by the city's top chef's. This festival kicks off the BC spot prawn season, which lasts about 6 to 8 weeks. You also have the opportunity to purchase live prawns straight from the boats at the dock! There were tons of people there, and the food looked and smelled delicious. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to purchase a food ticket in time and they were sold out by the time I arrived.

I haven't been to Granville Island in a long time!

Fisherman's Whaf
Some live spot prawns.
Alive and kicking!
The Vancouver Aquarium was there to promote their Ocean Wise program. Luckily these spot prawns are Ocean Wise, so it's okay to eat. ;)
A wooden statue of a heron.
Boiled spot prawns.
People enjoying their plates - 3 spot prawns, with sides of potato salad, rolls, chick peas and salad.
Since I wasn't able to get any prawns, I wandered on over to Granville Island in search of sustenance. I stumbled upon Terra Breads and I just couldn't resist their delicious looking baked goodies!
Nothing like some fresh baked bread.
3 kinds of Focaccia breads. I tried the one in the middle - cheese and herb.
Mocha flavored macaroon. It was so good!
Sweet baked goods. The Apple Focaccia in the corner is something I want to try next.
Those tarts look really tasty.

20x the points can actually add up quite quickly. I am going to be purchasing an item that is $96 for my mum, so instead of getting only 960 Optimum points, I will be receiving 19,200 points, which is worth $34.36 if you redeem at the maximum level (95,000 points = $170). But if you're like me and a savvy shopper, you will wait to redeem your points on a Bonus Redemption day, in which case, those points are worth $40.42 (95,000 points = $200). And if you're really patient, and wait for a Mega-Bonus Redemption day (which only happens once a year!), those 19,200 points will be equivalent to $50.53. So if you do the math, I'm actually only going to be paying only about half of what the original product will be worth!

If you don't collect Shoppers Optimum Points, this is a great week to sign up!

Nintendo Selects - $14.83 @ Walmart

A while back, Nintendo repackaged some of their hit Wii games as Nintendo Selects, with a price point of $19.99 per game instead of $59.99. It was a pretty amazing price drop for the exact same game, and I almost wished I didn't purchase the games when they first came out so that I could get them at this great price. Almost.

This week, Walmart has the games on sale - so you save even more! Only $14.83 for what I think are some of the Nintendo Wii's best games. The games available are:

- Mario Super Sluggers
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Super Paper Mario (love this game!)
- Mario Strikers Charged
- Zelda Twilight Princess
- Animal Crossing
- Punch Out
- Wii Sports

Time to stock up on video games, I think!

Batman Arkham City - $29.99 @ Futureshop

This week, Futureshop has Batman Arkham City for Xbox on for only $29.99, $20 off the original price. This is a relatively new game, so it's a a great time to buy it if you've been waiting for the game to drop in price. Remember you can price match at other electronic stores if Futureshop is out of stock.

Cache

I went to Caché last Friday to celebrate my sister's birthday. Tucked away in a corner of Yaletown, Caché is a quaint little bistro and lounge, offering a French fusion menu that includes interesting and delicious dishes.

Pan seared wild Coho salmon with lemon glaze, sauteed green beans and coconut rice.
Chocolate mousse mango lava cake.
This is only what I ate - I didn't take a picture of the other dishes, but they were all very nicely presented and there was a unanimous agreement that the entrees were delicious. The mango lava cake was to die for! With a new menu rolled out for the spring, Caché should be added to your list of restaurants to try!

Dove Beauty Bar - Product Review

Dove White Beauty Bar contains 1/4 moisturizing cream so it's creamier when you use it. Like all Dove soaps, the scent is very pleasant and lingers on your skin after your shower. I think the Dove Beauty Bar would be great to travel with - I usually don't use soap to clean my face but because it is a softer soap with moisturizing cream, it did not dry out my skin. It lathers up well and washes off clean. The Beauty Bar left my skin feeling very soft and fresh. Because Dove Soap is very soft, I seem to go through one bar faster than other soaps. I have been using Dove soap for as long as I can remember, so I would definitely recommend it! Also try the Go Fresh Dove soaps - the scents are amazing!
